Use the website listed below to determine your assigned earthquakes damage, magnitude, and number of deaths. Summarize the decription of the earthquake in a paragraph and explain your thoughts and feelings as you read about this earthquake.

On a sheet of paper, graph the number of deaths according to the scale of the earthquake on a sheet of paper. (use a bar graph).

Respond to at least one classmates post by comparing the earthquake you summarized to the earthquake your peer summarized. Be sure that your classmates summarized a DIFFERENT earthquake than you did.

The earthquake I have is Pakistan. It happened on October 8th 2005. The magnitude was 7.6. At least 86,000 people died and 69,000 were hurt. The worst damage was in Muzaffarabad area. It destroyed many places in Pakistan. The most destruction was to buildings. This earthquake was felt in many different areas of Pakistan. About four million people were left homeless!! Also, this earthquake damaged roads and highways which means people could not come help or get away from the damaged area. Landslides and rockfalls also occured from this earthquake.

My earthquake was in Messina,Italy. The magnitude of this earthquake was 7.2. To be that size it caused alot of damage not only in Messina but in surrounding areas as well. There were 72,000 casualties caused by this earthquake. Fires, tsunamis, and aftershocks were some of the damages caused by this earthquake. Because of this earthquake, over 40% of the population of Messina was killed. Tsunamis from the earthquake towered to heights of 6-12m(20-39ft) of the coast of Sicily south of Messina and heights of 6-10m(20-33ft) along the coast of Calabria. The aftershocks continued into 1913.

The Sumatra earthquake has been the third largest earthquake since the 1900s, and is the largest since 1964 in Alaska. The total number of deaths or people missing was 227,898. This 9.1 earthquake left around 1.7 million people homeless. This earthquke was felt all over the Middle East. The tsunami killed more people than any other in recorded history. The tsunami had some effect in 3 of the 4 oceans those oceans were: the Atlantic, the Pacific, and the Indian. This earthquake caused dormant volcanoes to become active. In all, this was a devasting event for history in this 2004 earthquake. December 26, 2004 and the days following were very devastating.

This earthquake happened near Portugal,Lisbon. It occured on November 1, 1755. It killed around 70,000 people. The magnitude scale of this earthquake was 8.7. All of this happened on a Sunday which was All Saints Day. So most people at this time were at church. While the earthquake was happening buildings swayed and then collapsed to the ground. Many people who found safety near the river front were drowned by a huge wave called a tsunami. Fires and floods caused from this earthquake made 1/4 of the population of lisbon perish.

The earthquake caused extensive damage to northern Pakistan. The heaviest damage was in Muzaffarabad, but in Uri 80% of the town was destroyed. At least 32,335 buildings collapsed. From this earthquake, at least 1,350 people were killed and 6,266 people were injured in India. An estimated 4 million people were left homeless. The earthquake I read about was a devistating one in Eastern Sichuan,China. It happened on December 05,2008.The number of deaths were 87587.And the magnitude was a 7.9. Many landslides occured when this earthquake struck. About 5 million people were homeless. Many were injured and many were missing. About 21 million buildings were damaged or had collapsed. Trains had been pushed off tracks, rivers were messed up with debris and dirt, and tap water pipelines had burst. Many towns and contries felt this terrible earthquake.

The earthquake that I read about occured in Packistan. The most damage was done in the Muzaffarabad area. This 7.6 earthquake caused extensive damage in many countrys including China, India, and other cities and towns. Uri, one of the cities hit, had 80% of the town destroyed. The number of people dead or injured was hard to imagine, at least 87,350 dead and the same or more than injured. Almost 4 billion people were out on the street after the quake had taken its toll. This earthquake caused so much damage, they are probably still working on fixing the damage to this day.
