It is actually sudden movement in the Earths crust. They occur near plate boundaries. They either converge (collide), diverge (move away from each other), or shear (grind past each other). Moving magma such as volcanoes can cause earthquakes too. In a way they do "slip", but you have to be more specific with what you mean by slip. because there is a couple different way an earthquake is caused. Energy is also released in the form of waves causing the earth to move rapidly.

Earthquakes are generally a movement under earth's crust that we can experience in the form of seismic waves. As the crust floats on top of the asthenosphere in sections called plates, they often interact with each other and release an immense amount of energy in the form of seismic waves. These can range from small earthquakes (that we can't even feel) and very catastrophic ones that can, in fact, destroy cities and towns.

Earthquakes occur when the plates(which float on the athenosphere)interract with eachother. Most earthquakes are caused by plates that slide past eachother, subduct, or collide into each and don't subduct, just continue to push. The release of energy from this is called seismic energy, and we feel it as earthquakes. Seismic energy causes listing, swaying, and the destruction off buildings and street, or moves rivers, or makes mountains!

Earthquakes are the sudden movement of earth's crust. Below the crust is the asthenosphere, the upper part of the mantle that is composed of liquid rock. Plates float on top of this layer and can be forced to move around. When they shift they will collide and slid past each other causeing the wave of an earthquake. Even though an earthquake can happen anywhere at any time it mostly happens at plate boundaries. Another way a earthquake could happen is by volcanoes. The movement of rock and magma is a way it is caused. The energy is meassured by the "magnitude" of the earthquake.

Earthquakes are movements of the earth's crust. The plates of the earth's crust float on top of the asthenosphere ,and can be forced to move as the molten material below moves. As the plates shift an amount of energy is released making it in the form of waves. They can occur anywhere with no warning ,but the worst earthquakes occur near plate boundaries. Moving rock and magma from volcanoes can also make earthquakes.

An earthquake normally occurs a long a fault, but can occur anywhere. The cause of an earthquake to happen is when a rock breaks or cracks. It quickly releases energy, causing a seismic wave to shake the earth. When the two different parts of the rock or plates start to move, they will catch on the uneven parts of the break (sides could look like this:~) it is ot even. This makes the ground shake because it is not moving smoothy (like these sides:- it is straight). If fault were like this, there would be no earthquake. Because the sides would move evenly not rubbing together unevenly. this is amazing how an earthquake works! That is how an earthquake works.

Most earthquakes are formed when rocks under the surface of the earth break apart. When the rocks just all of a sudden brake apart it lets out a burst of energy which would be seismic waves and it cause the earth to shake.....When two plates are moving they could get stuck because the plates do not move smothly because they get caught up on other rocks. When the rocks are stuck on each other they just push each other (which isn't very nice) ,but they do not move away from each other. After a while though, the rocks finally break apart because all the pressure that is being put on them. As the rocks break it causes a earthquake! While the earthquake is happenig teh rocks begin to move again and get stuck forming the "focus" of the earthquake.

An earthquake is experienced durring the sudden movement of the Earth's crust. the Earth's crust is made of multiple sections, broken up into plates. These plates float on-top of the asthenosphere which is the highly ferocious, weak, and deforming region of the Earth's upper mantle and it comes from a Greek word asthenes (weak + sphere). Interesting, right? Anyways, with the plates floating on the asthenospere, sometimes they shift as the magma below it moves, and as the plates move, a gargantuan sum of energy is released in the form of waves, seismic waves. We feel this release and know it as an earthquake, seism or a temblor.
